For the wildlife expert, or just an average traveler who loves to be in the midst of untamed nature, a wildlife sanctuary is the place to be. The most well known of these forest reserves is probably the Yellowstone natural park. And what drives people here is not the rare species of animals found, or the unending greenery around. Most visitors come to Yellowstone to witness a unique natural phenomenon: the eruption of a natural geyser. Other sanctuaries are just as breathtaking, and must be in the itenary of any visitor to the region where one of them is located.

The most famous of the wildlife sanctuaries is listed below:

1. Aspen valley wildlife sanctuary, Canada

2. Sathya Sai sanctuary, Ireland

3. Bergeron’s exotic sanctuary, Canada

4. Assisi animal sanctuary, UK

5. Ferne animal sanctuary, UK

6. Willows sanctuary, UK

7. Freedom Farm animal sanctuary, USA

8. Grateful acres animal sanctuary, USA

9. Wild animal sanctuary, USA

10. Yellowstone national park, USA

Apart from the ones mentioned above, there are many world famous sanctuaries in Africa, most notably in Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Since wildlife in Africa is abundant, it is but natural that the continent has an array of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks.

The basic aim of a wildlife sanctuary is to protect the wildlife: plants, animals as well as birds. So, it comes as no surprise that every wildlife sanctuary will be host to a rich variety of flora and fauna. Most sanctuaries and national parks exist with the sole purpose of protecting endangered species that may be found in that region. Species such as the Bengal tiger, snow leopard, polar bear, Indian rhino, great white shark, emperor penguin, etc need to be saved from the brink of extinction. The wildlife sanctuaries not only allow these species to exist in their natural habitat, but steps are also taken to ensure that their numbers go on the rise. The officials in charge of the sanctuary ensure that enough security measures are taken so as not to allow any illegal activities such as poaching in and around the premises of the forest reserves. Also, the newborn animals and the young are closely monitored and proper care is given. The cutting down of trees is strictly prohibited, in a bid to protect whatever precious little forest is left. A census is taken from time to time, and the number of animals belonging to each species is carefully observed.

The aid of the indigenous people living in the forest area is vital for animal conservation. Indigenous people would have made the forest their home many years ago, and their understanding of their surroundings plays a crucial part in helping the forest rangers in their quest for animal conservation. The ways of the tribals play a huge role in the maintenance of the balance of the ecosystem. The officials in charge of the wildlife reserves employ the natives to help in the conservation. This not only provides the natives with an excellent employment opportunity, but also allows the forest officials to enlist the services of the “experts” so to speak.

There was a time when forests were in abundance around the globe, and a rich variety of species thrived in them. However, rapid industrialization in the past several decades has almost all but managed to vanish these forests all over the world. Also, in an attempt to protect his own life, man has wantonly been killing wild animals. That is not the end of the story though: poaching and hunting as a sport of the elite has also been rampant all over the world. What this has done is that it has drastically reduced the wildlife population on planet earth. It took some time for man to realize the importance of these havens for wild animals. The forests, and the animals they house, are not only flourishing ecosystems by themselves, but are also greatly important to the overall balance of the environment. So, to protect these ecosystems and hence, mother earth, the idea of wildlife sanctuaries was mooted.

Wildlife sanctuaries are basically a natural forest area that has been cordoned off, so that there is no further destruction of the ecosystem in the name of “industrialization”. The entire gamut of Flora and Fauna in the sanctuary is tended to in a manner that is as unobtrusive as possible, so as not to upset the delicate balance of nature that exists. The region’s wildlife is constantly monitored, and the numbers of each species in the area is kept track of. The basic aim of the officials in charge of the sanctuary is to make sure that the numbers of the wildlife species, especially the endangered ones, do not dwindle.

The wildlife sanctuaries’ animals are not the only ones taken care of. In many cases, tribals living in the area are also considered to be an integral part of the reserve, and thus are considered in the census-making as well. In fact, the aid of the tribals is crucial to the proper invigilation of the sanctuary.

Today, a part of almost every major forest, or grassland, is demarcated as a wildlife reserve. These sanctuaries serve many purposes. They act as a safe habitat for wild animals; safe from poachers and other predators. The wildlife sanctuaries also attract tourists from across the world. This helps in the generation of invaluable income to the country. These sanctuaries are a great way of generating employment opportunities among the natives in the region. All this of course with the added benefit of preservation of natural beauty of the region.

In view of the responsibilities bestowed upon us humans to take care of the Earth, it is imperative that we step forward and ensure that these wildlife sanctuaries are well protected from deforestation, industrialization, poaching and other illegal activities. The endangered species that these sanctuaries protect need to be constantly overseen and studied, and steps must be taken so as to make sure that their numbers increase steadily. The wildlife sanctuaries are the last hope for mankind to preserve nature at its untamed splendor.

The sheer size of the Indian subcontinent and the geographical diversity implies that a rich mosaic of flora and fauna exists in the country. The type of wildlife changes continuously as we move from south to north in the country.

The vegetation varies throughout the region. The rain forests lie on the southwestern coast, in Kerala. There are numerous lagoons, and cooconut treesin the area. The Nilgiris and other hilly areas of South India provide lush tropical vegetation. The Andaman Islands and Arunachal Pradesh are other regions with well preserved rain forests, as well as the forests in central and coastal Karnataka. The various trees found are, sandal, teak and sisoo and wild Indian date palm.

The Himalayan foothills present a mouth watering course to botanists around the world. The slopes of the mountains are carpeted with lush Pine forests. Trees like spruce, fir, beech, ash and maple thrive in this region.

India is most well known for its tigers. But, more than 500 mammals call the country their home. The Asiatic loin, and the Indian rhino, alnog with antelopes such as the chinkara, (Indian Gazelle), barasinghas (swamp deer), chitals (spotted deer), muntjacs (barking deer) and sambars can effortlessly be seen in various wildlife sanctuaries across the World.

Apart from these well known species, there are other animals that can be spotted in the region. Buffaloes, massive Indian bisons (gaurs), striped hyenas, wild pigs, jackals, Indian foxes and wild dogs are a common sight in most Indian forests. Other smaller mammals that are found include the giant squirrel and the mongoose. The monkey and its other varieties is also very popular in India. Major species include the langur, and baboon. The monkeys are a common sight in and around the many temple across the country. There are other big cats apart from the tiger and lion too. The forests in India are home to panthers, leopards, and short-tailed jungle cats.

The number of species of birds in the country adds up to around 2000.Wildlife sanctuaries are terrific breeding grounds for birds, as they provide the necessary sheltered vegetation to make nests. Also, the wildlife reserves in India is a perfect haven for migratory birds, in search of hibernating spots, or just stops along a long journey. The flamingo is probably the most famous of the migratory birds that visit India. There are also over 500 species of reptiles and amphibians. Snakes such as the king cobra and python, giant tortoises and crocodiles, and the monitor lizards of the Andaman and Nicobar islands are only some , to name a few.

India is home to a huge variety of stunning butterflies as well, along with more than 30,000 different inscet species. Common insects like the cockroach , as well as the exquisite praying mantis can all be found.
